A home is more than just a roof over your head. It is a place where you come home, where you live together, and where you seek each other out. For students, this is often the classic student house: living together under one roof with a shared living room (GK) where your housemates become your second family. However, in recent years, these classic student houses are disappearing at a rapid pace. Since the municipality stopped issuing permits to landlords in 2019, classic student houses are vanishing, while existing student houses are being converted into independent studios. Thus, an important living arrangement is disappearing without equivalent alternatives being created. At the same time, the housing shortage for students remains significant. The City Council increasingly points to the Zernike Campus, but in new neighbourhoods like Stadshavens, students are being excluded. Living on campus can be an addition to the housing supply for students, but it should never take the place of students who want to live in the City.

STUDENT HOUSING
We are once again issuing permits for new student houses and stopping the disappearance of classic student houses in the streets of Groningen.
We are stopping the conversion of student rooms into studios by no longer granting permits for this.
We are building new student housing that is affordable, sustainable, and social: with shared facilities such as kitchens, good living quality, and a pleasant living environment. We are urging corporations to structurally include this in new construction.
We protect the right to apply for a place, so that students can decide for themselves who they live with.
We are building a Zernike Campus with at least 1500 homes, good facilities, plenty of greenery, and homes with a shared living space (GK). Students will be actively involved in the design and layout.
