Groningen is growing, and the way we move around must grow along with it. Mobility determines how livable the city is. Streets should be places where you can walk, cycle, and linger comfortably, not just routes to drive through. Cycling and walking fit best in a compact city like Groningen, but there must be enough bike parking spaces, and public spaces need to be logically organized.

At the same time, public transport is lagging behind. Buses are packed during peak times, and connections with the region and the rest of the Netherlands are too slow. Line 15 to Zernike is the most well-known example, but certainly not the only one. Without better public transport connections and alternatives to the car, Groningen will become less accessible, less safe, and less attractive.

Student en Stad want mobility to contribute to a healthy, accessible, and future-proof city. This means more space for cyclists and pedestrians, better and faster public transport, and connections that link Groningen to the rest of the country. This way, the city remains livable, safe, and ready for the future.

We encourage walking, cycling, and public transport, as this is healthier, safer, and better for the climate.

We provide enough bike parking spaces so you can always park your bike close to home or right in front of the door when you are doing quick grocery shopping.

We also see opportunities for indoor bike parking at Herestraat, Westerhaven, and Vismarkt.

We are making the enforcement policy for bike parking clearer and less strict.

We are giving room to residents who want to convert car parking spaces (temporarily) into bike spaces, greenery, or recreational areas.

We are realizing a north-south tram connection between the Main Station and Zernike. Until then, we are ensuring more buses on that route.

We are committed to faster train connections Groningen-Amsterdam (Lelylijn) and Groningen-Zwolle.

We are holding discussions with NS, the province, and the public transport authority about a regional travel pass for international students, so that public transport becomes more accessible to them.

We are reducing traffic accidents with more one-way streets, lower speed limits, and logical streets and intersections.

We are creating more (secured) P+R locations around the city with quick transfers to public transport or shared mobility.

We promote shared mobility, zero-emission vehicles, and distribution hubs. For more, see our chapter on 'Sustainable Mobility'↗.
